Unfortunately there was a lot of spam in this good old news group but here an announcement of a new game of stars:

Fledgling Admirals VIII

A pretty straight short game which is intended to lure back oldtimers (considering themselves beginner to lower intermediate) and to bring in new players. It's the 8th game I'll be hosting of this type. Each is a bit different and usually with a new bunch of players.

To make the battleground even, players experienced in the mean combat vs other humans will have to leave some leftover points in the race wizard (see restrictions).

Game Info
* Players: 6 - 9
* Skill level: beginner - lower intermediate
* Ranked: No
* Version: 2.6 J rc4, 2.7 J rc3 (German)
* Autohost: Yes
* Turn generation: 5 turns a week (Mo-Fr) up to year 2430, then 3 turns/week (Mo-We-Fr) as soon as requested by at least one player. Weekends and holidays off (do notify me about holidays).
* Host is playing: No
* Universe size: small packed (240 stars in a 800x800-ly-universe), distant starting positions
* Starting conditions: ACC BBS
* Victory conditions: Last Man/Last Team standing or consensus. Winning team mustn't exceed 2 players.

Restrictions for your race-design depending on experience
a) for beginners (no Stars-experience vs humans or 1 game and soundly beaten):
* banned: AR (Alternate Reality) and PP (Packet Physics)

b) for advanced beginners (up to 3 games vs humans and not part of the winning alliance):
* banned: AR
* all other PRTs: 60 leftover points
Leftover points can be spent as you like.

c) for rusty oldtimers and lower intermediates:
* banned: JoaT, SD
* AR: 0 leftover points
* IT: 150 leftover points
* all other PRTs: 100 leftover points
Leftover points can be spent as you like except on mineral concentration.
T
he game will be hosted at starsautohost.org where we have a still lively community. A lengthy description of the game you can find as a post there:
* http://starsautohost.org/sahforum2/index.php?t=msg&th=5190
Please, post your interest there.

Perhaps some Stars oldtimers feel tempted (well, at least if you weren't too good back then, after all the game is for beginners to lower intermediate)...

If I can persuade Stars! to run on W7 (64 bit), I'll be interested.

Stars oldtimer, definitely no more than lower intermediate and
decidedly rusty.

While I am still using XP, the (partly) missing W7-compatibility has often enough come up that there is an own thread at starsautohost with several possible solutions for the problem:

Thanks for that.

I was already in the process of installing VirtualBox - which is
freeware from Sun (now Oracle) allowing you to run a virtual PC as
suggested in the first post.

I notice that was referred to in a later post, so hopefully I will
have it working tonight or tomorrow (currently installing XP in a
virtual PC from the CD I still had from my previous computer)

OK, I have it working in a Windows XP virtual machine.

That was easy :)

Now I just have to remember how to play, after several years out.

As I had already said, I have it working in Virtual Box.

*Many* times better than DosBox.

It's good to see the IRC channel is still alive with a lot of the old Stars!
gang still there.

Talk about nostalgia... I use to love staying up late night and playing the
blitzes. Got my butt kicked but the channel was an excellent addition to the
game and community.

I'm glad that there are still games being posted for Stars! I miss that old
4x games. Was one of the "pure" games of the genre.

If I still had it I would join. If there are still enough games out there I
will find another copy and install it.
